Ralph was elected Sheriff of the City of London, in 1458; he was electedalderman from Corn Hill ward,November 29, 1456; was master of theCompany of Drapers, 1457-8; auditor in 1463; lord mayor of London,1464-65, and again in 1476. He was knighted by King Henry VI, at theexpiration of his first term in officeas Lord Mayor May 24, 1465.He wasa member of Parliament for London, in 1467.In his mayoralty, Sir Ralphhadthe wall of London repaired between Aldgate and Aldersgate, and theFleet Ditchcleaned. He also corrected abuses of bakers and victuallers. From the pointof view of public service, he was certainly the mostprominent man in the Family. Sir Ralph died October 25, 1478, and wasburied in St. Swithin's Church, London, of which he was a benefactor, "ina 'fair tomb' which was destroyed in the Great Fire in 1666." A memorialbrass was erected to his memory in the Church atSawbridgeworth, hisbirth-place, bearing the following inscription:"Orate pro anima RadulphiJoslyne quondan militis et bis maioratus Cituitatis London que obitxxvOctob. Mcccclxviii." The inquisition post mortem on his estate shows thathe died seised ofthe manors of Chadwell in Chadwell, Thurrock, East Tilbury, West Tilbury,the manor of Bursted, andlands and tenements in West Ham, all in countyEssex. The manor of Aspenden Hall in the parishes of Buntingford,Layston, Throcking, Wyddial, Westmill, and the manors of Anstery andFidlers, all in Hertfordshire. Sir Ralph left no children. His heir was George (21), oldest son of hisbrother, Thomas. The widow,Elizabeth, shortly after his death, marriedSirRobert Clifford of Brakeborough of county Kent. The Church at Long Melford,co. Suffolk, contains a fine oldstained-glass window, represent Sir Robert Clifford, his wife Elizabeth,andher first husband, Sir Ralph Jocelyn.
