Bibliographic Information: Brigham, Willard Irving Tyler. The historyof the Brigham Family. The Grafton Press. New York. 1907. HANNAH2, daughter of Thomas1 and Mercy (Hurd) Brigham; born inCambridge, Mass., 9 March, 1649-50; died in Marlborough,Mass., Dec., 1719; married (1) Gershom Eames(*) of Marlborough, whowent to Watertown, Mass., on the breaking out of King Philip's War,where he died 25 Nov., 1676; married (2) William, son of William Ward(who was in Sudbury as early as 1639, and owned land there); born inSudbury, 22 Jan., 1640; died in Marlborough, 25 Nov., 1697. The historians have had a good deal of trouble over Hannah withrespect to her marriage, Morse having married her to Samuel Wells ofGlastonbury, Conn., and Hudson (p. 357) concurring with the historianof Shrewsbury that Gershom Eames married Hannah Johnson, daughter ofSolomon and Hannah Johnson. The Sudbury records show the birth of aHannah, daughter of Solomon Johnson (who was Solomon, Jr.), but shewould have been only 14 years old when Gershom Eames married HannahBrigham. Paige corrects these errors (pp. 501-2), and we can supporthim with overwhelming evidence. Paige first quotes two Massachusettspublic records; one wherein her name is given as Hannah Ward andanother where William Ward, her husband, joins with Thomas2, John2,and Samuel2 Brigham, in 1681, in conveying to Nicholas Fessendencertain of the Thomas1 Brigham land in Cambridge. Paige continues: "I do not find any Hannah Ward in that town who could representherself as a daughter of Thomas Brigham, except the wife of WilliamWard, who united with the Brighams in the sale of (*) the Cambridgeland. This Hannah had been the wife of Gershom Eames; and is supposedby her descendant, Andrew H. Ward, in his History of Shrewsbury (p.457) to have been a daughter of Samuel Johnson of Sudbury. But I thinkit more probable that Thomas Brigham was her father, and that JohnBrigham, who witnessed the execution of her will, Oct. 30, 1714, washer brother." Hannah Eames had two children: Hannah (named for herself) and aposthumous daughter, Mary. She lived in Marlborough both before andafter her marriage to Mr. Ward, although she probably accompanied herfirst husband to Watertown at the time of King Philip's War. In herwill, executed 30 Oct., 1714, she makes pathetic reference to the boyElisha, who was killed or stolen by the Indians. After the usualintroductory formula, she devises as follows:WILL OF HANNAH BRIGHAM-EAMES-WARD..... The name in the early records is spelled with an E, but most of thefamilies have dropped the E and spell it Ames (Hudson's History ofMarlborough, p. 358).
