THOMAS6 BRIGHAM (JOHN5, THOMAS4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) wasborn Abt. 1603 in Holme, Spalding Moor, Yorkshire, England/Spalding,England, and died December 8, 1653 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Hemarried MERCY HURD 1637. She was born Bet. 1588 - 1593 in England, anddied December 23, 1693 in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Notes for THOMAS BRIGHAM: Governor Winthrop has left a graphic narrative of sixty-four days onshipboard coming hither from old England in 1630. The Rev. RichardMather also kept a journal of his passage, in 1635, which occupiedtwelve weeks and two days from taking ship at Bristol to the landingat Boston. These stories present a vivid picture of the perils andprivations attending the long voyage Thomas Brigham encountered alittle earlier in the latter season, from the somewhat more remoteport of London. He must have first set foot on the New England shoreearly in June, for none of the few passenger lists of that time whichhave escaped loss or destruction we read: "VIII April 1635. Theis under written are to be transported to NewEngland imbarqued in the "Susan and Ellen", Edward Payne Mr (Master). The p'ties have brought certificates from y Ministers and Justices ofthe peace y they are no subsidy men; and are conformable to y ordersand discipline of the Church of England. "Thomas Brigham 32" Aboard the same ship were Symon Crosby and his wife and infant, futureneighbors in Cambridge; Ralph Hudson and Percival Green, who were tobe fellow-townsmen there, and also two boys, Benjamin and Daniel, withtheir father, the learned and reverend Peter Bulkley, who the sameyear was to found the town of Concord and long was its pastor andbenefactor. In September 1639, Thomas Brigham lived in Cambridge "In the West endone house with three acres of Land and a half the highway to WatertownNorth Joseph Isack Southeast Symon Crosb (y) Southwest, the high wayto the Windemill Hill West." In the 20th Century, this is the cornerof Brattle Street and Ash Street. Thomas Brigham was made by the General Court a Freeman of theMassachusetts Bay Company, April 18, 1637, and thus became a member ofthe body politic and acquired the right to vote. Notes from The History of the Brigham Family from the New HampshireHistoric Society 20 Park Street, Concord, New Hampshire, obtained byKen and Susan Barbi on August 12, 2000. This Thomas Brigham (whom we shall call the "Sixth") was the firstgeneration in America. He was called "The Emigrant"; also called "ThePuritan". In the spring of 1635 a small party of Yorkshire adherents of Rev.Thomas Shepherd, who had been preaching in Buttercombe, a few milesnorth of Holme on Spalding Moor, decided to migrate with him to NewEngland, and went to London, where on April 18, 1635, they embarkedamong the passengers of the "Susan and Ellen". in the passenger listappears: Thos. Brigham, aged 32 Symon Crosby, husbandman, aged 26 Ann Crosby, uxer, aged 25 Tho. Crosby, child aged 8 weeks. Ann, the wife of Symon Crosby was the daughter of Thomas and IsabelBrigham and from the evidence previously given, there can be no doubtthat Thomas Brigham, her fellow passenger, was her own first cousin, double related and a son of John and Constance (Watson) Brigham. Hemust have first set foot on the New England shore early in June, forin one of the few passenger lists of that time which have escapeddestruction, we read; VIII April 1635. From WFT Pedigree number 0893 1 May 1995 More About THOMAS BRIGHAM: Burial: Old Burial Ground on the south side of Cambridge Common, butno stone remains to mark the spot. Notes for MERCY HURD: Mercy was 10 or 15 years younger than her husband, and that, persecuted in England for nonconformity, she came to New England withher sister, who married William (?) Cutter. Mercy Hurd married for her second husband, 1 March 1655, Edmund Rice, then of Sudbury, but who removed in 1660 to Marlborough, where he died3 May 1663. On Mar 26, 1676, she was with the people of Marlborough when assembledin their meeting house for worship when the alarm was sounded and theybarely reached the garrison house in time to find safety from theattacking Indians, who burned houses and barns and destroyed orchardsand cattle. The people shortly retreated to the towns to the eastward, where they remained for some months until peace was assured. Genealogical Register of Decendants of Puritans BRIGHAM Brigham is a Saxon word, compounded of Brigg, bridge, and ham, house. It was originally the name of a manor, now called the parish ofBrigham, in the county of Cumberland, adjoining Scotland, to whichkingdom it has at times belonged. It lies on the south side of theriver Derwent, here crossed by a magnificent bridge, and revealing onthe opposite bank the trace of a Roman fortress. It is quiteextensive. It embraces four townships, several chapelries, and theborough of Cockermouth, which formerly sent two members to Parliament. It is bounded by a chain of small lakes, and the rivers Maron andDerwent, and is intersected by the Cocker, requiring so many bridges, and giving so many brighams, as might have suggested and renderedappropriate the name. The old Parish Church, an ancient structure, dedicated to St. Bridget, is yet standing on the bank of the river, half a mile out of town. The living is a discharged vicarage, rated inthe king's books at œ20, and in the gift of the Earl ofLonesdale.............................. The following is the first and only mention of him obtained fromEngland. "Thomas Brigham aged 32 years embarked at London for New EngdApl. 18, 1635, in the ship Susan & Ellyn, Edward Payne Master." It isnot ascertained that any other of the name ever embarked for thiscountry. There was a John "Brigan," (Brigham) who owned land inWatertown in 1642, who might have been his brother, for he named a sonJohn, but nothing further is reported of him. There was also a Sebastian Brigham, who, in 1638, bought a lot for ahouse and garden between Crooked and Long streets in Cambridge, but Ifind no further trace of him. No other early or later emigrant of thisname, save Thomas, appears to have left issue in New England, and onlytwo others, both from England and still living, are ascertained tohave settled in other states. Thos. Brigham's name first appears on our records at Watertown. Here,in 1637, he was the proprietor of a fourteen acre lot, "bought of JohnDogget & bounded W. by the homestall of Sir Richard Saltonstall, S. byCharles River & E. by Cambridge former line, being on that strip whichwas taken from Watertown in 1754 and annexed to Cambridge. He settledhard by, and built his house in Cambridge, on a lot of 3 1/2 acres, which had been assigned him by the townsmen in 1638. This lot wasbounded N. E. by the road from Cambridge to Watertown, S. E. by JosephIsaac, S. W. by Symon Crosby,(+) and N. W. by the highway to WindmillHill, by which it was separated from Watertown line and his lot in do.It was about two thirds of a mile W. of the site of HarvardUniversity, and in 1642 contained a dwelling-house and outhouses, andwas then mentioned as situated at the W. end of C. His lot inWatertown abutted upon Charles River at the most northern curve of thestream, contained the first high bank above the site of FortWashington, and offered the first facility on the N. side for a wharf. Here, according to reliable tradition, a wharf was very early built, and no doubt a depot to accommodate the inhabitants of Watertown andof other towns, if not of Cambridge, which had no wharf as late as1650. Did not Thos. Brigham erect these, and was he not a commissionmerchant? Thos. Brigham m., about 1637, Mercy Hurd, a lady 10 or 15 years hisjunior, of whom tradition has brought down a high character, allegingthat she and her sister, who m. Wm.? Cutler, were so tantalized inEngland for their non-conformity, that they resolved on seeking theirliberty and fortunes in New England, and arrived unattended byhusbands or lovers. The tradition is direct, and probably reliable.Success rewarded the enterprise. They were in as quick demand asunmarried teachers at the West; and if the number of worthy husbandswhom a lady marries is the measure of her worth, then Madam Brighamwas a most worthy and attractive woman, for she m. no less than three, viz: Thos. Mary was the first Brigham born in America, and as such deservesespecial mention. Paige, in his History of Cambridge (pp. 501-2), amost thorough and painstaking work, chronicles that "Mary went toSudbury and Marlborough with her mother, brothers and sister, when her father died, where she married John Fay of Marlborough." And hecites evidence, as already indicated by a legal document (Mid. Prob.Recs., vii. 9), wherein, joining with other complainants, John Fay andSamuel Fay, children of Mary Fay of Marlborough, and heirs of ThomasBrigham, late of Cambridge, began suit September 28, 1695, to recovercertain lands in the possession of Samuel Hastings, who possessed alsothe Puritan Brigham homestead. John Fay Sr.'s wife was Mary, and therewas no other Fay in Marlborough at that time of suitable age to be thefather of said John, Jr., and Samuel Fay, parties to said suit. Paigewas undoubtedly correct, and we must include in our genealogy of theBrighams the children of John and Samuel Fay, sons of Mary (Brigham)Fay. Both of them had large families, among them being sons who becamethe heads of numerous branches (see Fay Family). There was also adaughter, Mary Fay, who married Jonathan3 Brigham, her cousin, and ason of Thomas2 Brigham; they had 10 children, thus starting severalmale lines of Brighams. Hudson, in his Hist. of Marlborough, does notconflict with Paige's position; and he adds that John Fay retired(with most other Marlboroites), during King Philip's War, toWatertown, where he buried his wife Mary and a young son David, justcoming five years. John Fay, the husband of Mary Brigham, came to America when he waseight years of age. No mention is made of his parents. He is found inMarlborough as early as 1669. I. 1. Thomas Brigham,2 2d, on the marriage of his mother to EdmundRice, seems with his brothers and sister to have continued with her.On attaining his majority he purchased of his father-in-law for œ30 atown right in Marlborough' "of 24 acres, with the frame of a dwellinghouse thereon, with all the privileges of the town commons and furtheraddition of allotments to be made thereto." And, Aug. 28, 1665, havingcompleted payment for the same, he received a deed from the executorsof Rice. This was a most fortunate purchase. It has advantageouslyaffected the circumstances of thousands of his descendants to thisday: For it constituted him an extensive proprietor of the lands ofwhat are now four townships, mostly of the altered mica and hornblendslate formations, the richest of extent in Mass. on which agriculturecan be profitably pursued. In 1686 he was one of a company to purchase6,000 acres of the Indians situated near Marlb., and afterwards"annexed to her." This further enlarged his claim to wild lands, and,as fast as he and his sons increased in ability to occupy them, theydrew lots, and mostly in the S. W. part of what is now Marlborough',and in those portions of Northboro' and Westboro' which arecontiguous. He settled in the S. W. part of the town, on what is now called theWarren Brigham farm, on the south road to Northboro'. He drew 63 acresat one division, 39 of which was on the side of Crane Hill, on a pathfrom his house to Crane Ordinary. The house which he built afterPhilip's war, and which was subsequently used as a garrison, is yetstanding; and even the chair in which he expired is in theneighborhood, in the possession of one of his descendants, Mrs. LewisAmes. He was probably one of the principal citizens of the town, butin what capacities he served her or the church cannot be ascertained, owing to the loss of records. He made his will April 17, 1716, whichwas proved Jan. 2, 1717. In this he gave to David and Gershom all hislands situated on the W. side of Assabet River [S. branch] and otherlands near them; and to Nathan and Jona. in equal shares all that partof the Eaton Farm on the E. side of this stream. To Elnathan, whom hehad previously settled on a part of this Farm, he gave more land, andmade Nathan, Jonathan and Gershom his executors. To each son he hadprobably before conveyed tracts for farms on which they had long beensettled; and he must have been an extensive land owner. How manyfarms, mineralogically the richest in New England, have long beeninherited from him! He had 5 sons, and his two brothers had 9, of whom8 lived to have families in the same community; and yet four times thenumber of his descendants have been traced. To what is thisattributable, except to his inheriting the largest portion of theirfather's estate, and seizing lands on a narrow strip of mica slate?Samuel secured lands partly upon it, and his seed remains. John forhimself and sons went down entirely off of it, and who can report hisrace? If they ever turn up in a series of generations, in one place,it will probably be where they have ascended to the formation whichtheir fathers left, or to a newer one. Thomas2 m. Mary Rice, b. Notes for THOMAS BRIGHAM: Thomas Brigham married a second wife Susanna, on 30 July 1695,daughter of William Shattuck of Watertown and widow (1) of JosephMorse and (2) of John Fay, whose first wife was Mary, the sister ofThomas. It will be noted that every descendant of Thomas is also adescendant of Edmund Rice, who is an ancestor of many colonialfamilies in eastern Massachusetts. He had a large number of children, some of whom were of mature age at the time of the emigration. Notes for SUSANNA SHATTUCK: Susan "Susanna" Shattuck who was the widow of Joseph Morse marriedJohn Fay as her second husband after John Fay's first wife, MaryBrigham, died. Susan already had 7 children by Morse, and John Fay's 4children, and gave birth to 4 more children by John Fay. After JohnFay's death, Susan married as her third husband, Thomas Brigham, whowas a brother of John Fay's first wife, Mary Brigham. It isinteresting to record that from Susan's last marriage, one of herdescendants [actually it was her husband Thomas' brother Samuel] wasPeter Bent Brigham who left a sum of $1,000,000 which was not to bespent until 25 years after his death. By this time the fund had grownto $2,000,000 and was used to build the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, aworld famous medical research hospital connected with Harvard MedicalSchool in Boston, Mass. [Brigham(1907) p. 63] Notes for JOHN FAY: John Fay embarked May 30, 1656, at Gravesend, England, and arrived inBoston on June 27, 1656, at the age of 8 years on the Speedwell(sister ship of the Mayflower). John was by no means the first Fay tocome to America. Available Town records in New England show forexample that (1) Richard Fay resided in Dorchester MA in 1634; (2)Henry Fay, a weaver of Newberry MA died 6/30/1655 and (3) William Faywas admitted as a townsman in Boston in 1643. These Fay'sunquestionably preceded John Fay to America (1656), but there are norecords to establish any interrelationship between any of them. There is, however, reasonable evidence that his father and a brotherMichael had preceded him to America. Although there is no documentedrecord of the father (David) or Michael's birth or death. Reference ismade in the early Town records of Sudbury, Massachusetts, that thefather of John and Michael was David Fay "who came to America prior to1656." On the other hand the direct lineage of the descendants of JohnFay from his birth in 1648 down to 1898 were clearly and logicallydocumented in the records accumulated in Orlin P. Fay's book. The passenger list of the Speedwell lists five minors, including JohnFay age 8 years. These young men were bound to Sudbury MA (settled 17years previously) where each of them had parents or relatives. It ispresumed that since John Fay was the youngest of these minors, he verylikely had parents already residing in Sudbury. Shortly after John Fay's arrival a group of recent immigrants, including young John moved to a new grant which was newly incorporatedunder the name of Marlborough, MA. The early records of Marlboroughshow that John Fay was made a freeman in 1669, at which time he had awife and child. In 1675 the name of John Fay appears among theproprietors of Worcester Mass., and that he had a lot of 50 acresassigned to him "in the eastern squadron, lying next to the Countyroad to Boston." Although, he owned land in Worcester he continued tolive in Marlborough until the marauding Indians during the PhillipsWar made it necessary to move his family to the greater security ofWatertown Mass. While in Watertown he buried his first wife, MaryBrigham and one child. His second marriage was to Susan "Susanna"Shattuck who was the widow of Joseph Morse. She had 7 children byMorse and 4 by John Fay. After John Fay's death, Susan married as herthird husband, Thomas Brigham, who was a brother of John Fay's firstwife, Mary Brigham. It is interesting to record that from Susan's lastmarriage, one of her descendants [actually it was her husband Thomas'brother Samuel] was Peter Bent Brigham who left a sum of $1,000,000which was not to be spent until 25 years after his death. By this timethe fund had grown to $2,000,000 and was used to build the Peter BentBrigham Hospital, a world famous medical research hospital connectedwith Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass. The list may have been prepared at departure by theSearcher's office or later by the vessel's master, under a high bondas assurance of the accuracy about those actually making the voyage(such lists were dated at arrival and were endorsed at the Searcher'soffice on return of the vessel). The source listing, however, showsthe "J.E." entry as an endorsement after that of the Searcher'soffice. In this case, the initials "J.E." were not those of the masterand the month was not specified. There are unpublishedrecords in England which support this research, but I haven't gottento see them firsthand. Anyway a large clan of FAY family members arestill in England and trace themselves to Collingbourne-Ducis,Wiltshire well before 1600. There is a David FAY marrying an ElizabethCoale/Cole in December 1616 in Penton Mewsey. This is published in theParish marriage records, which I found at the Clayton Library inHouston, TX. This is the only David Fay I've found in England for thisperiod. Children of MARY BRIGHAM and JOHN FAY are: 14. i. JOHN8 FAY, JR., b. November 30, 1669, Marlborough,Massachusetts; d. February 22, 1675,Marlborough, Massachusetts; d. January 4, 1768, Marlborough,Massachusetts. Notes for ENSIGN JONATHAN BRIGHAM: Jonathan Brigham married his cousin, Mary Fay. He settled in what wasa part of the Thomas Brigham Estate in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Hewas prominent in his community and held offices of responsibility. Hewas commonly called the "Indian Warrior". One day while chopping inthe woods, he saw a savage preparing to take aim at him; he seized hismusket, stepped forward in full view, exclaiming as he did so, "Shootstraight, you dog". Both fired at the same moment, then the Indiandropped his gun, and with a tremendous whoop, bounded high into theair and fell dead. The Indian's bullet passed close to the ear ofJonathan, who escaped unhurt. Source WFT Pedigree number 893 10. Hannah BrighamBorn 09 Mar 1650 Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA, died 08 Dec 1719 Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA, 69 years http://www.familytreemaker.com/_glc_/3658/3658_53.html The History of the Brigham Family Author: Willard Irving TylerBrigham Call Number: R929.2 B855Zb v. 01 This book contains a record of several thousand descendants of ThomasBrigham the Emigrant. 1603-1653. Bibliographic Information: Brigham, Willard Irving Tyler. The historyof the Brigham Family. The Grafton Press. New York. 1907. HANNAH2, daughter of Thomas1 and Mercy (Hurd) Brigham; born inCambridge, Mass., 9 March, 1649-50; died in Marlborough,Mass., Dec., 1719; married (1) Gershom Eames(*) of Marlborough, whowent to Watertown, Mass., on the breaking out of King Philip's War,where he died 25 Nov., 1676; married (2) William, son of William Ward(who was in Sudbury as early as 1639, and owned land there); born inSudbury, 22 Jan., 1640; died in Marlborough, 25 Nov., 1697. The historians have had a good deal of trouble over Hannah withrespect to her marriage, Morse having married her to Samuel Wells ofGlastonbury, Conn., and Hudson (p. 357) concurring with the historianof Shrewsbury that Gershom Eames married Hannah Johnson, daughter ofSolomon and Hannah Johnson. The Sudbury records show the birth of aHannah, daughter of Solomon Johnson (who was Solomon, Jr.), but shewould have been only 14 years old when Gershom Eames married HannahBrigham. Paige corrects these errors (pp. 501-2), and we can supporthim with overwhelming evidence. Paige first quotes two Massachusettspublic records; one wherein her name is given as Hannah Ward andanother where William Ward, her husband, joins with Thomas2, John2,and Samuel2 Brigham, in 1681, in conveying to Nicholas Fessendencertain of the Thomas1 Brigham land in Cambridge. Paige continues: "I do not find any Hannah Ward in that town who could representherself as a daughter of Thomas Brigham, except the wife of WilliamWard, who united with the Brighams in the sale of (*) the Cambridgeland. This Hannah had been the wife of Gershom Eames; and is supposedby her descendant, Andrew H. Ward, in his History of Shrewsbury (p.457) to have been a daughter of Samuel Johnson of Sudbury. But I thinkit more probable that Thomas Brigham was her father, and that JohnBrigham, who witnessed the execution of her will, Oct. 30, 1714, washer brother." Hannah Eames had two children: Hannah (named for herself) and aposthumous daughter, Mary. She lived in Marlborough both before andafter her marriage to Mr. Ward, although she probably accompanied herfirst husband to Watertown at the time of King Philip's War. In herwill, executed 30 Oct., 1714, she makes pathetic reference to the boyElisha, who was killed or stolen by the Indians. After the usualintroductory formula, she devises as follows:WILL OF HANNAH BRIGHAM-EAMES-WARD..... The name in the early records is spelled with an E, but most of thefamilies have dropped the E and spell it Ames (Hudson's History ofMarlborough, p. 358). Who were Edmund Rice's ancestors. Putting to rest much misinformation about his ancestors! Twice in the 20th century nationally recognized research genealogistshave attempted to determine the parents and ancestors of Edmund Rice.Mary Lovering Holman described the negative result of her search forrecords in the parishes near Stanstead and Sudbury, Suffolk County,England in "English Notes on Edmund Rice … ", The AmericanGenealogist, Volume 10 (1933/34), pp. 133 - 137. Mrs. Holman isconsidered by many to be one of the best research genealogists in the20th century. In 1997 the Edmund Rice (1638) Association commissionedDr. Joanna Martin, a nationally recognized research genealogist wholives in England only a few miles from Stanstead and Sudbury to searchagain for records of Edmund Rice's parents. Dr. Martin reported in1999 that she found no record that identified Edmund's parents orancestral line. Several authors of published works and computer data sets have claimednames for Edmund Rice's parents. Regrettably they have not givensources that would assist in definitive genealogical research. Forexample, the Ancestral File and International Genealogical Index, twopopular computer data sets widely distributed by the Church of JesusChrist of Latter Day Saints, offer parent candidates that include:Henry Rice and Margaret Baker, Henry Rice and Elizabeth Frost, ThomasRice and Catherine Howard, and Thomas Rice and Elizabeth Frost. From Mrs. Holman's paper we have an excellent record of one HenryRice's marriage to Elizabeth Frost in November 1605 at Stanstead. Mrs.Holman also documents the baptism of Edmund's first child on 23 August1619 at Stanstead. If this is the Henry Rice and Elizabeth Frost towhich the LDS records refer, the LDS records must be erroneous. Ourresearchers have not been able to find records that support any HenryRice and Elizabeth Frost, Henry Rice and Margaret Baker, Thomas Riceand Catherine Howard, or Thomas Rice and Elizabeth Frost as parents ofEdmund Rice. A scholarly investigation by Donald Lines Jacobus, considered by manyas the dean of modern American genealogy, appeared in The AmericanGenealogist, Volume 11, (1936), pp. 14-21. Jacobus traced many of thefalse accounts to the book by Dr. Charles Elmer Rice entitled "By theName of Rice … ", privately published by Dr. Rice at Alliance, Ohio in1911. Edmund Rice deposed in a court document on 3 April 1656 that he wasabout 62 years old. Sudbury, England includes three parishes, two ofwhich do not have complete records for the years near 1594, which isEdmund's most likely birth year. Thus, if he were born in Sudbury,England his records have been lost and we may never know his origin. In his address to the 1999 annual meeting of the Edmund Rice (1638)Association, Gary Boyd Roberts, Senior Researcher, New EnglandHistoric Genealogical Society, reviewed all of the genealogicalsleuthing on Edmund's parentage. Mr. Roberts is well known for hisresearch on royal lineage. He concluded that there was no evidencewhatsoever that supports the published accounts of Edmund Rice'sparents and no evidence that Edmund Rice was from a royal lineage. The Edmund Rice (1638) Association is very interested in proving theancestry of Edmund Rice. The association encourages anyone who canidentify a primary source that names Edmund and his parents toidentify that source. Records of a baptism, estate probate, or landtransaction naming Edmund and his parents are the most likely recordsto contain that proof. Until someone can cite such a record, theassociation must state emphatically that Edmund Rice's parents andancestry are not known and that Edmund Rice's descendants can notclaim royal ancestry.
