5. Matthew2 Barton (Edward1)(6) was born in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH circa 1640. He married three times. He married Martha. He married Sarah circa 1679. Sarah died circa 1688. He married Elizabeth Tapley December 20, 1694 in Salem, Essex, MA. Elizabeth was born 20 JAN 1664 in Salem, Essex, MA. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Tapley and Elizabeth Pride. Matthew was employed at as a shipwright. In 1675 Matthew was among those from Maine granted temporary residence in Salem because of the indian troubles. He was recorded as from Cape Porpoise. In 1729 Matthew formerly of Cape Porpoise but then of Salem, sold the Cape Porpoise farm to James Ruck of Salem for the sum of forty pounds. The family had been driven out by the Indians after about twenty years and Matthew became a mariner and shipwright. For many years he divided his time between Salem and Cape Porpoise. In 1668 Matthew and wife Martha sold their dwelling house and one-fourth acre of land by the south harbor in Salem to William Dicer. By 1675 Martha is mentioned as a temporary resident of Salem on account of the Indian troubles. In 1683 Matthew purchased a house and one sixth acre of land for Đ35 and purchased adjoining land several years later. Matthew Barton and Martha had the following child: + 13 i. He married Anne Green October 24, 1673.(5) (Anne Green is 574.) Anne was born circa 1657. Anne was the daughter of Nicholas Green. In 1681 William received one hundred acres, lying between the great and little marshes, near the Cape Porpoise river. He also bought one hundred acres from his brother in law John Puddington. In 1686 William and others petition to have the public records continued at York; and in 1689 he was one of those appointed for the surveying and laying out of lots of land. The family was driven from Cape Porpoise by repeated indian troubles but in 1720 the town of Arundel, formerly Cape Porpoise, regranted to his sons, John and Ebenezer, all their fathers rights in lands and marshes on the Cape Porpoise River. The early records make mention of Barton's Creek, Barton's Cove, Barton's Neck and Barton's Further Neck, also called Easter Neck. William Barton and Anne Green had the following children: + 9 i. 7 vi. Elisha Barton was born in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH circa 1655. Elisha died after 1688/1689 in Kittery, York, ME. He married Mary Crockett. Mary was born about 1657. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Crockett and Ann Lynn Gunnison. Elisha and Ephriam Crockett registered an agreement at the Court of Sessions 28 October 1684 in York whereby for the sum of 12 pounds Elisha discharges his wife's right to her father's estate. The sum was payable over three years at 4 pounds a year. Elisha gave a deposition on 20 December 1677 concerning a case against William Hilton accused of assault on Smuttynose. He was said to be about 22 at the time.

8. Mary2 Barton (Edward1) was born circa 1657. She married John Purrington. John was born about 1635 in Tiverton, Devonshire, England. John was the son of George Purrington and Mary. In 1658 John was located in what is now Harpswell, ME on the peninsula called Merriconesq Neck. He and Nicholas Cole were partners in a fishing boat. In 1666 he was in Cape Porpoise and mortgaged the boat and land, loosing them two years laters when he was unable to pay off the loan. He was appointed town clerk in Cape Porpoise between 1679 and 1689. Mary Barton and John Purrington had the following children: 24 i. John3 Purrington. 25 ii. Elizabeth Purrington. 26 iii. Joshua Purrington. 27 iv. Mary Purrington. 28 v. George Purrington. 29 vi. James Purrington. James died 12 July 1718 at 54 years of age. 30 vii. Deacon Hezekiah Purrington was born in Cape Porpoise, York, ME circa 1680. Hezekiah died June 8, 1718 in Truro, Barnstable, MA, at 37 years of age. He married Mary Scammon. Mary was born circa 1687.

I indicated that Edward Barton was born in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH circa 1647 as that is the location his father was recorded as living at the time. There are no documents proving this. 6 v. Edward Barton was born in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH circa 1647. I indicate that Edward was born in Portsmouth as that is the location his father is recorded as living at the time. There are no documents proving this. In 1672 Edward and brother Benjamin (see below) Barton were among the petitioners at Cape Newagen, ME to the Massachussetts Bay Goverment for protection; and in 1674 Edward took the oath of fidelity both at Pemiquid and at Salem. He was a soldier in King Phillips war and was mentioned as being at the garrison at Mendon, now in Worcester County. In 1674 the General Court ordered that he be allowed to "keep a house of public entertainment and to retail beere, wyne and liquers at Cape Bonewagon in Boothbay Southport. He was jailed in Boston for resisting the draft for a Maine expedition and filed a suit there in 1682.
